Flooring Box Calculator

Flooring is commonly sold by the carton or box rather than by the exact square foot. Start with the floor area, add a sensible waste allowance, then divide by the coverage printed on the package.

Calculate floor area

For a rectangular room, multiply length × width. If a floor has multiple rectangular sections, calculate each section and add them together. Keep your sketch so you can verify the total.

Add waste for cuts and off-cuts

Waste depends on the room shape, plank or tile size, installation pattern and the installer’s method. A simple rectangular room with a straightforward layout may need less waste than a complex room with many cuts.

Divide by box coverage

Purchase area = floor area × (1 + waste percentage). Boxes = purchase area ÷ coverage per box. Because boxes are whole units, round up to the next complete box.

Example

If a room is 12 ft × 10 ft, the floor area is 120 square feet. With 10% allowance, the planning area is 132 square feet. If each box covers 20 square feet, 132 ÷ 20 = 6.6, so you would need 7 boxes.

Keep spare material

For many flooring products, keeping a small amount from the same production batch can make future repairs easier. Follow the manufacturer’s installation and storage guidance.

Use the calculator

Ready to run the numbers? Use the BuildPlanTools calculator, then compare the estimate with the product label, supplier information and project requirements.

These estimates are for general planning. Product specifications, site conditions, local requirements and professional recommendations should take priority where applicable.
