Flooring Waste Calculator

Flooring waste is the difference between the exact floor area and the material you need to purchase. The right allowance depends on room shape, pattern and installation method.

A simple way to calculate waste

Multiply the floor area by 1 + the waste percentage. For example, 100 square feet with a 10% allowance becomes 110 square feet of planned material.

What increases waste?

Irregular rooms, many doorways, diagonal or patterned layouts, short usable off-cuts and installation mistakes can all increase waste. Product dimensions can also affect how efficiently pieces fit the room.

What may reduce waste?

A simple rectangular room and a layout that makes good use of off-cuts can reduce waste. However, do not lower the allowance just to make the calculator result match a budget; follow the product and installer guidance.

Boxes are rounded up

After applying waste, divide the planned area by the coverage per box and round up to a whole box. The calculator does this automatically.
