PROJECT GUIDE
How to Calculate Square Footage for Flooring
Accurate floor measurements make the rest of a flooring estimate easier. Calculate each room or section, add the areas, then apply the product’s recommended waste allowance.
Measure length and width
Measure the usable floor length and width. For a simple rectangle, multiply the two numbers. Measure in feet if you want the result directly in square feet.
Add multiple rooms
Calculate each room independently and add the square-foot results. This makes it easier to find a measurement error and account for different flooring products or installation boundaries.
Add a waste allowance
Multiply the total floor area by 1 + the selected waste percentage. The result is the planning purchase area.
Convert the area into boxes
Divide the planning purchase area by the manufacturer’s stated coverage per box. Round up to a whole box, because you cannot buy a fraction of a carton.
Check the product before ordering
Coverage printed on packaging should be treated as the primary source. Installation pattern, plank dimensions, room shape and manufacturer guidance can all change the amount required.
Use the calculator
Ready to run the numbers? Use the BuildPlanTools calculator, then compare the estimate with the product label, supplier information and project requirements.
These estimates are for general planning. Product specifications, site conditions, local requirements and professional recommendations should take priority where applicable.
