How to Estimate Mulch
A practical method for measuring beds, converting depth to volume and deciding how much mulch to purchase.
Measure each bed
Measure length and width for rectangular beds. For curved or irregular areas, break the shape into simple sections. Add the areas together.
Choose a target depth
Use the depth appropriate to the landscape design and the mulch product. Enter that depth in inches and convert it to feet by dividing by 12.
Calculate volume
Multiply total area by depth in feet to get cubic feet. Divide by 27 to convert cubic feet to cubic yards.
Account for real conditions
Beds may have plants, borders, slopes and uneven surfaces. A modest allowance can help, but it is better to improve the measurement than to rely on a large arbitrary buffer.
Compare the result with bag coverage
Bagged mulch is often labeled by cubic feet rather than cubic yards. One cubic yard equals 27 cubic feet, so convert units before comparing bulk and bagged options.
Remember settling
Organic mulch can settle or compact after installation. Follow the product guidance and the maintenance plan for the bed instead of assuming one application is permanent.
