PROJECT GUIDE
Mulch Depth Calculator
Mulch quantity depends mainly on the area you want to cover and the depth you want to apply. Use the calculator to estimate cubic yards, then compare the result with the bag or bulk product you plan to buy.
Calculate mulch volume
Multiply length × width × depth in feet to get cubic feet, then divide by 27 for cubic yards. If depth is entered in inches, convert it to feet by dividing by 12.
Why depth matters
A small change in depth can noticeably change the amount of mulch required. Measure the existing bed area carefully and choose a depth appropriate for the material and landscape use.
Bulk versus bagged mulch
Bulk mulch is often sold by cubic yard, while bagged products may state a volume per bag. If you buy bags, convert the required cubic feet to the product’s stated bag volume and round up to whole bags.
Example
A 20 ft × 8 ft bed is 160 square feet. At 3 inches deep, the depth is 0.25 ft, so the volume is 40 cubic feet, or about 1.48 cubic yards before an allowance.
Avoid overestimating from a generic depth
Different plants and landscape situations may call for different depths. Follow local horticultural guidance and product recommendations instead of assuming that one depth fits every bed.
Use the calculator
Ready to run the numbers? Use the BuildPlanTools calculator, then compare the estimate with the product label, supplier information and project requirements.
These estimates are for general planning. Product specifications, site conditions, local requirements and professional recommendations should take priority where applicable.
