How to Calculate Paintable Wall Area
A paint estimate starts with the surface area to be coated. For a simple rectangular room, calculate the four walls, subtract major openings and then account for coats and paint coverage.
Calculate the four walls
Use 2 × (room length + room width) × wall height. This gives an approximate total wall area before openings.
Subtract doors and windows
Estimate the area of major openings that will not receive wall paint. If you are painting around small trim or irregular features, the exact deduction may be less important than using the product coverage and allowing for touch-ups.
Multiply by coats
If the paint requires two coats, the paintable surface is effectively covered twice. Product instructions should determine the recommended number of coats.
Divide by coverage
Divide the total coated area by the paint’s stated coverage per gallon. Coverage is product-specific and can vary with surface texture, porosity, color and application method.
Do not ignore preparation
Cleaning, patching, priming and allowing surfaces to dry can affect the final result. A calculator estimates quantity; it does not replace the preparation and application instructions for the paint product.
Use the calculator
Ready to run the numbers? Use the BuildPlanTools calculator, then compare the estimate with the product label, supplier information and project requirements.
These estimates are for general planning. Product specifications, site conditions, local requirements and professional recommendations should take priority where applicable.
