How to Calculate Square Footage for Multiple Rooms

When a floor plan has several rooms or an irregular shape, the easiest approach is to calculate each simple section separately and then add the results.

Measure each room separately

Measure the length and width of each rectangular room in the same unit. Write the measurements next to a simple sketch so you can identify which number belongs to which space.

Calculate each area

For a rectangle, area = length × width. A 12 ft × 10 ft room is 120 square feet. Repeat the calculation for each room or section.

Add the areas

Add the square footage of all sections. Do not add lengths and widths together before multiplying; that changes the geometry and produces the wrong result.

Handle irregular rooms

Split an L-shaped or irregular space into two or more rectangles. Calculate each rectangle and add them. If one section overlaps another, do not count the overlap twice.

Use square footage for material planning

The total area can become the starting point for flooring, paint, tile, sod and other material estimates. Each material still needs its own coverage, waste or depth assumptions.

Use the calculator

Ready to run the numbers? Use the BuildPlanTools calculator, then compare the estimate with the product label, supplier information and project requirements.

These estimates are for general planning. Product specifications, site conditions, local requirements and professional recommendations should take priority where applicable.
